Spanish Grammar Primer

Spanish grammar can be a bit daunting for beginners, especially if you are not familiar with the grammatical rules of your own language.

That's why I discuss Spanish grammar from an English speaking point of view in this section.

If you already know the basic concepts but would like to learn more advanced stuff, you may want to check out the bibliography at the end of this section.

Do you have to learn grammar to learn Spanish?

Well... yes... and no.

On the one hand you can learn to speak a language by simply listening to and repeating that language everyday as much as possible. That makes sense, doesn't it? That's how children learn to speak

Kids do not worry about what's an adjective, a noun, a pronoun, etc. We all pick the subtleties of a language's code by trial and error. And during that developmental period, kids are afraid of criticism as much as adults when learning another language.

If they were, not many people would be able to speak at all!

On the other hand, however, learning another language's grammar gives you almost a cookie-cutter system where you add new words in the list of words you learn in given places of a sentence to convey a message in that language in the correct sequence (called "syntax").

You know what I mean: Yoda talk.

That's the same stuff non-English speaking people experience when the order of their words in their sentences.

Learning grammar enhances your understanding of how Spanish works, mostly with logical rules to follow, but unfortunately with many exceptions along the way.

That's just the way languages work, and there is nothing you can do about it!

The links below take you to basic grammatical concepts you may find useful when practicing Spanish.
